✨ How to Clean & Store Your Indian Clothes the Right Way

Indian outfits are stunning—but they also need a little extra love to stay fresh, vibrant, and long-lasting. Whether you're twirling in a net lehenga, running errands in a cotton kurta, or draping a flowy polyester sari, here’s your go-to guide for keeping them looking brand new:

🧼 General Rules for Indian Clothing Care

  • Always check the label before washing.
  • Spot test for color bleed with water on a hidden part of the fabric.
  • Avoid direct sunlight when drying—colors can fade fast.
  • Use mild, color-safe detergents only (see list below 👇).
  • When in doubt, dry clean, especially if there’s embroidery or zari.
  • No plastic storage—use muslin or cotton bags instead.
  • Steam, don’t iron delicate or embellished items.

🧴 Recommended Mild Detergents for Indian Outfits

Stick to gentle, non-damaging detergents that are safe for delicate fabrics:

  1. Woolite Delicates – Great for silks and synthetics, easy to find in stores.
  2. Babyganics 3X Baby Detergent – Ultra-gentle and non-toxic.
  3. Eucalan No-Rinse Delicate Wash – Ideal for net, chiffon, and embroidery.
  4. The Laundress Delicate Wash – Premium option with great scent, safe for embroidery.
  5. Seventh Generation Free & Clear – Gentle and fragrance-free, great for cotton and polyester.

👗 Polyester Saris

Cleaning:
Polyester is pretty low maintenance. Hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Skip the dryer—just hang it to dry in the shade. Steam it if needed (low heat only!).

Storage:
Fold loosely and store in a breathable cotton or muslin bag. Avoid plastic—moisture + plastic = yellowing. Refold every 6 months to prevent permanent creases.

👕 Cotton Kurtas

Cleaning:
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water using a color-safe detergent. Always separate darks and lights (especially for the first few washes). Let it air dry in the shade to avoid fading.

Storage:
Fold and store in a drawer or fabric bag. Add a lavender sachet or cedar block to keep bugs away naturally. Wash and rotate them seasonally to keep them fresh.

👑 Net Lehengas (With Embroidery)

Cleaning:
These are delicate, so dry cleaning is your safest bet. For small spots, gently dab with a soft cloth and baby shampoo. Use a steamer to refresh—never iron directly.

Storage:
Store flat or on a padded hanger in a muslin garment bag. Slip acid-free tissue between folds to protect embroidery. Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity.

🌿 Bonus Tip: Go Natural

Skip harsh chemicals. Stick with gentle, natural products and breathable storage bags to keep your desi fits looking (and smelling) fresh!
