What to Wear for Diwali — Colors, Outfits and Etiquette
Diwali is the one festival where dressing up is genuinely part of the point. New clothes for the new year, bright colors against the dark of the shortest nights, and fabric that catches candlelight. Here’s what to wear — whether you’re going to a house party, a temple, or an office celebration.
- Wear something new if you can — it’s traditional for Diwali.
- Gold, marigold, red, and jewel tones are the classic palette.
- Metallics work especially well — they catch diya and candlelight.
- Skip black and white. Both read as inauspicious for the festival.
- Going to a temple? Cover shoulders and knees, and expect to remove shoes.
What Diwali is
The festival of lights — five days marking the triumph of light over darkness. Homes are cleaned and decorated with diyas (oil lamps) and rangoli, families exchange sweets, and many people buy new clothes and gold to mark the occasion. For a lot of families it functions like New Year: fresh start, new things, everyone dressed up.
You don’t have to be Hindu to be invited or to celebrate. If a friend or coworker invites you, showing up dressed for it is a genuine compliment to them.
Colors that work
- Gold and marigold — the most Diwali-specific colors there are. Warm, festive, associated with prosperity.
- Red — auspicious and celebratory. Unlike at a wedding, red is completely fine here.
- Jewel tones — emerald, sapphire, fuchsia, deep purple.
- Metallics — this is the one occasion where shimmer genuinely earns its place. Diyas and candles are the main light source, and metallic thread catches them.
Skip: black and white. Both carry mourning associations and read as out of step with the festival.
What to wear where
House party
The most common Diwali invitation. Anything festive works — a salwar kameez, an anarkali, a lehenga if you want to go big, a kurta for men. You’ll likely sit on the floor at some point, and there may be a small puja. Comfortable and covered is the sweet spot.
Temple
Cover shoulders and knees. Shoes come off at the entrance. Bring a scarf. Simpler is better — save the heavy embroidery for the party after.
Office or community Diwali
These skew slightly less formal. A kurta with jeans is genuinely acceptable at many of them for men; a kurti with palazzo pants works for women. If you’re unsure, an anarkali is never wrong.
Kids
Comfortable and bright. Kids run around, eat sweets, and get near sparklers — dress them in something you don’t mind getting a bit destroyed.
A note on sparklers and diyas
Practical, not cultural: dupattas and open flames don’t mix. If there will be diyas on the floor or fireworks outside, pin your dupatta rather than letting it hang loose, and be careful with anything sheer.
Come find something
Diwali is our busiest stretch of the fall. Come in early in the season if you want the widest selection — the gold and marigold pieces move fastest.
