A Bangladeshi wedding invitation may include several celebrations, each with its own mood. Before buying one outfit for the whole schedule, ask which events you are invited to, how formal they are and whether the family has requested particular colors or coverage.
Gaye holud: check the color theme first
Gaye holud is a pre-wedding turmeric celebration found in many Bangladeshi wedding schedules. If your invitation includes it, ask whether guests have a color theme and whether you will take part in applying turmeric. Yellow or another bright shade may be requested by the family; the invitation should guide you.
A lighter sari or comfortable salwar kameez can be an option when the hosts welcome it. Choose an outfit you can move in, and remember that turmeric can stain. Save a delicate or difficult-to-clean piece for another event if you expect close contact with turmeric.
For women: sari or salwar kameez?
A sari can work beautifully for a formal wedding or reception. Look at the blouse, drape and complete outfit together. If you are new to wearing one, test the pleats and hem with your shoes, then sit down and walk before deciding.
A dressy salwar kameez pairs a tunic with trousers and often an orna, also called a dupatta. It can be a useful choice if you prefer a familiar fit, sleeves or an outfit that needs less draping. Confirm exactly which pieces are included rather than assuming every set is complete.

Images show styling options, not a claim that the garments are Bangladeshi-made or a particular Bangladeshi weave. Pieces, sizes and availability vary.
For men: panjabi, trousers or a formal suit
In Bangladesh, a men’s kurta-style tunic is often called a panjabi. A dressy tunic and coordinated trousers may suit an event where the family encourages South Asian festive dress. Ask whether a vest or jacket would fit the formality. A Western suit may also be welcome when that matches the invitation.
Try on the complete set. Check the trouser waist, seat and length as well as the tunic shoulders and sleeves. A garment name alone does not tell you the fit, fabric or finish the family has in mind; bring a reference photo if they have requested a specific style.
Nikah, religious ceremonies and receptions
If you are attending a Muslim nikah, ask whether any part takes place in a mosque and what the venue requires for sleeves, hemlines and head covering. A sheer orna is not the same as an opaque head covering. Confirm these details before shopping. Our Muslim wedding guest guide offers more questions to ask.
For a Hindu, Buddhist or Christian ceremony, ask the family about that venue’s expectations rather than carrying over rules from another event. A reception may allow a more embellished outfit, but follow the stated dress code and leave bridal styling to the couple.
Can guests wear red, white or black?
There is no reliable single color rule for every Bangladeshi wedding. Check with the family before choosing a bridal-looking red ensemble, an all-white look or any color that might have a particular meaning to them. Also ask whether relatives or wedding-party members have reserved a palette.
Do I need a Jamdani sari?
Only if that is what you want and what the hosts have requested. If someone specifies Jamdani or another particular textile, ask for the exact requirement and verify the garment’s description. A sari with a similar color or pattern is not automatically the same weave. Contact us before travelling about any specific textile; availability must be confirmed.
What should I bring to the fitting?
Bring your invitation, event dates, shoes, coverage preferences and a photo of your partner’s outfit if you want to coordinate. Ask about ready-made versus unstitched blouse pieces, petticoats and any separately priced accessories. Confirm alteration costs and timing before purchasing.
