What do I wear as a non-Indian guest to an Indian wedding or event?

Choose a modest, colorful outfit — a sari, lehenga, salwar kameez, sharara, or gharara. For weddings, avoid white and black (mourning colors) and avoid red unless you are the bride. For Diwali or garba, brighter and bolder is welcome. Come in, tell us the event, and you are out the door in 20 minutes.

Do you carry red bridal lehengas?

Not many. Traditional bridal red, maroon and burgundy is not what we stock deeply. What we do have: bridal lehengas in plum, emerald, navy, ivory and gold, and sarees in red with unstitched blouses you can have made to any shape you want.

What's a reasonable budget for a wedding-guest outfit?

Most guests spend $150 to $250 on a complete outfit — sarees, salwar kameez and lehengas all sit in that range, with the simpler pieces at the lower end. Individually: sarees from $150, salwar kameez from $100, lehengas from $200. Kids outfits are $50 to $125. No pressure, no upselling.

How long does a fitting take?

Many customers walk out in 20 minutes, brides included. You come in with a problem, we solve it that day. We are an efficient in-and-out store, not a two-hour bridal appointment atelier. Made-to-measure wedding party orders are the exception — those are placed online and take about three months.

Do you carry kids' and menswear?

Yes to both. Kids outfits for boys and girls run $50 to $125, with most between $50 and $75. Menswear: kurta pajamas $75 to $125, sherwanis from $250, jodhpuri suits and Indo-western outfits $250 to $350, vests from $100, bridal stoles around $100, and shoes $75 to $100.

Can I buy just a dupatta, blouse, petticoat, or accessory on its own?

Yes — we sell almost everything a la carte. Petticoats are $15, sari falls are $3, and turban cloth (pagri) is about $3.50 a yard. We also sell dupattas, skirts, blouses fitted individually, fabric for tailoring, artificial jewelry, bangles, tikkas, and other accessories. Come in whether you need a whole outfit or just one missing piece.

Where are you located and when are you open?

Do you ship or offer virtual fittings?

For everyday shopping we are an in-person store — the point of visiting is trying things on, and you can DM us on Instagram beforehand so we set options aside. Wedding parties are different: bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits are made to measure and ordered online through our order forms, with about three months of lead time.

How much do mens Indian outfits cost?

Kurta pajamas are $75 to $125. Sherwanis start at $250. Jodhpuri suits and Indo-western outfits are $250 to $350. Vests start at $100, bridal stoles are around $100, and mens shoes are $75 to $100. Come in and try things on — most men are dressed in about 20 minutes.

Can you dress my whole bridal party — bridesmaids and groomsmen?

Yes. Bridesmaids choose a pre-draped sari or a pant suit, $150 to $200 each. Groomsmen get a kurta pajama with a vest, or just the vest. Everything is made to measure in one colour picked from our 294-thread card, so the whole party matches. You order online through our wedding party order forms and we confirm every line with you before anything is made.

How far ahead do I need to order bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits?

About three months. These are made to order and come from our supplier in India, so we will not promise a wedding date we cannot hit. If your date is closer than that, come into the store — we carry saris, lehengas and menswear in stock and have dressed whole parties off the floor in an afternoon.

Am I Too Late to Buy Indian Clothes?

No. You are almost certainly not too late.

If your event is this weekend, or Thursday, or tomorrow, you can still walk into our store and walk out with a complete outfit the same day. Most people are done in about twenty minutes.

Weekends are our busiest days, so if a weekday happens to suit you, you will have more of the fitting rooms and more of our time. If the weekend is when you can come, come then. That is what we are open for.

We have been dressing wedding guests in Artesia since 1990, and a good share of them arrive in exactly the state you are in now.

Can you really walk out the same day?

Yes, and it is the normal way this goes, not a favor we do for emergencies. We carry a wide range of sizes on the floor precisely so that most guests can buy something that fits as it is and wear it that week.

It helps that a lot of Indian clothing is more forgiving than Western formalwear:

A pre-draped sari is stitched into shape and goes on like a dress. No pinning, no draping skill, nobody needs to help you at 6am.
A salwar kameez is a long tunic over loose trousers. It comes in sizes and it is the easiest thing to wear if you have never worn Indian clothes before.
Kurta pajama for men, with a vest or a Nehru jacket over it if you want to look more finished.
Lehengas and shararas have adjustable waists more often than people expect.

We will tell you honestly if something needs work. Most of the time it does not.

My event is in three days. Is that enough?

Yes. Come in today or tomorrow and you will have it in hand.

The only thing that genuinely runs out of time is heavy alteration on a fitted piece, and we will steer you away from anything like that the moment you tell us the date. Say the date first and we will work backward from it.

What should you bring, and what will we ask?

Four things, and none of them require any research on your part.

Your budget. Tell us the real number. It is not a rude question and it makes this much faster. We will show you what is good at that number rather than walking you past things that are not.
What color you want to wear, or what you are trying to avoid. If the bride has asked the party to wear something specific, tell us that.
Indoor or outdoor. This matters more than people realize. An outdoor afternoon in Southern California is warm, and heavy embroidery and thick silk get uncomfortable fast. A banquet hall with the air conditioning running is the opposite, and you can wear the heavier, grander piece happily. Outdoor evening, bring something for your shoulders.
The invitation, if you have it. A photo on your phone is fine. It usually tells us the event, the time of day and the venue, which answers half of the above without you saying anything.

Then we take it from there. You do not need to know the difference between a lehenga and an anarkali before you arrive. That is our job.

What does it cost?

Most guests spend $150 to $250 on a complete outfit. Saris start at $150, salwar kameez from $100, lehengas from $200. Men's kurta pajamas are $75 to $125, with vests and Nehru jackets from $100. Children's outfits are $50 to $125.

You are not expected to compete with the family. A guest outfit is a guest outfit.

What if you have never worn Indian clothes before?

Then say so at the door, and we will start with the easy things. A salwar kameez or a pre-draped sari is comfortable, needs no skill to put on, and looks completely right.

You are welcome to wear it, and you should. Turning up in Indian clothes reads as I took this seriously, which is exactly what the family hopes their guests will feel. We wrote a longer answer to that question here, if you have five minutes.

Is there anything that genuinely needs more time?

Only two things, and neither applies to most guests.

Custom and made to measure. A custom sherwani for a groom, or made-to-measure outfits for a whole bridal party, need about three months. If that is what you are after, start now rather than this week.
Matching a large group. Dressing eight groomsmen or six bridesmaids in the same fabric takes ordering time. There are separate forms for groomsmen and bridesmaids.

Everything else, come in.

No appointment. Bring the invitation or just tell us the date and we will do the rest. Most people are out of the door in about twenty minutes with a complete outfit, including the ones who walk in convinced they have left it too late.
