Plus Size Indian Clothing in Los Angeles

Plus Size Indian Clothing in Los Angeles

Extra small through 5XL, women and men, on the rack in Artesia. Come in and try it on.

XS to 5XL — both women and men

That is a wider range than most shops on Pioneer Boulevard stock, and we say it plainly because people ask nervously, as though the answer might be no.

It is not a special order and it is not a separate catalogue. It is hanging in the store with everything else. You can walk in today, try it on, and leave wearing it.

Why this is hard everywhere else

If you have shopped for Indian clothes above a US 16, you already know the pattern. The search results are almost entirely mail-order sites shipping from India. The sizing runs on a chart nobody explains, usually in inches, usually cut small. Returns mean posting a parcel back across the world. And it arrives four days before the wedding, in the wrong size, with no time left to do anything about it.

The alternative has been walking a street of shops asking the same question in each one and getting the same apologetic answer. That is a miserable way to shop for something you are supposed to feel good in.

We are not claiming to be the only shop in Los Angeles that can help. We are saying that we stock the range on the floor, we have it in the store rather than in a warehouse, and you do not have to ask in advance to find out whether it exists.

For women

Up to roughly a US 26 and a 54 inch bust, depending on the garment. Some silhouettes go further than others, and it is worth knowing which before you come.

Saris are the most forgiving thing we sell

A sari is a single uncut length of fabric. It does not have a size at all — it is draped and pinned to whoever is wearing it. The only fitted part is the blouse, and blouses are a separate piece we fit individually. Many of our saris come with unstitched blouse fabric, which means the blouse gets made to your measurements and your preferred shape: sleeve length, neckline, back, all your call.

If you have had bad luck with sizing before, this is the safest place to start. We are also happy to drape it for you before your event, $20 a person.

Anarkalis, gowns and shararas

An anarkali or a gown is one piece with a flowing line below the bust, so the fit question is mostly shoulders and bust rather than waist and hip. They are the least fussy thing to wear for a long event — nothing to re-pin, nothing that shifts when you sit down.

A sharara or a palazzo suit gives you a fitted top over wide, loose trousers. A lehenga is a fitted blouse with a long skirt, so it asks more of the waist measurement than the others do.

Salwar kameez

Straightforward and comfortable, and we carry it in the full range. We also sell fabric for custom tailoring if you want something stitched from scratch rather than adjusted.

For men

Up to roughly a 54 inch chest, and this is the part almost nobody stocks. Men's Indian formalwear above an XXL is very hard to find in a shop you can drive to — the search results are mail-order or Walmart. We keep the larger sizes on the rack:

  • Kurta pajama — the default for most events, and what most guests wear
  • Nehru jackets and vests — worn over a kurta to dress it up
  • Sherwani — for grooms and close family
  • Jodhpuri suits and Indo-westerns — the more tailored end

If you are a groom and want something made rather than bought off the rack, we do that too — see the wedding party order form.

What it costs

These are our normal prices. They are the same ranges published on our price guide — we do not keep a separate list.

Item Typical range
Kurta pajama $75 to $125
Vests From $100
Sherwani From $250
Jodhpuri suit or Indo-western $250 to $350
Petticoat $15
Sari fall $3
Blouses Fitted individually

If you also need coverage

A lot of people asking about size are asking about coverage in the same breath — full sleeves, a higher neckline, a dupatta that actually covers rather than decorates. Those are normal requests here and not a special order. Say what you need when you come in and we will pull the right things rather than making you hunt through the rail.

This comes up most often for nikkah and walima guests, and for anyone who simply prefers more coverage. Unstitched blouse fabric helps here too, because the sleeve length and neckline are decided by you rather than by a factory.

Come in and be sized

If you are not sure of your size, that is normal and it is not a problem — we measure people all day and there is a question about exactly this in our FAQ.

You do not need an appointment and you do not need to message first. Tell us the event and the date, we will pull the right things, and you can try them on. If something needs adjusting we will tell you honestly whether it can be done in time.

18507 Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia, CA 90701, in the middle of Little India. Free parking in our own lot directly behind the store.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Tuesday to Friday from 12:15 PM, Saturday and Sunday from 11:15 AM, closing at 6:45 PM. Come earlier in the day if you can — late afternoons get busy, and being measured properly is easier when the store is quiet.
